ASMT

EUROCONTROL's Automatic Safety Monitoring Tool finds safety events in air traffic management (ATM) surveillance data, so investigators can replay them. We have re-engineered and developed it since 2009.

What it is

Safety events, found in the surveillance data.

ASMT watches an airspace through the surveillance data a provider already has. It finds the events that matter for safety, records them, and keeps them so an investigator can replay what happened. Version 6 detects three types of safety occurrence:

  • Separation minima infringements: two aircraft closer than the required minimum, vertically and horizontally at once
  • Time to conflict: two aircraft on courses that would have taken them below minimum separation within a set time
  • Short-term conflict alerts, found from the aircraft's projected positions

Who uses it

Air navigation service providers, through EUROCONTROL.

EUROCONTROL offers ASMT to air navigation service providers (ANSPs) worldwide.

What we built

Re-engineered to keep up with traffic.

In 2009 we started moving ASMT to a new architecture, so it would keep up as traffic grew. From 2022 we rebuilt it again as version 6, released in July 2026. It covers:

  • ASTERIX surveillance data, received over the network or read from recordings
  • Decoding, then tracks assembled into flights
  • A detection service that flags events for review
  • Events replayed on a map
  • Filters, saved queries and export to Excel
  • Containerised services connected by a message broker
  • Administrator, reviewer and viewer roles

What made it hard

Live data, closed networks.

01Surveillance data arrives without pause, and every message has to be decoded.
02Tracks have to become flights before any event can be detected.
03Installations on networks with no outside connection, where updates are carried in, not downloaded.

How it runs

On the provider's own servers.

Each provider runs ASMT on its own servers. We develop and support it for EUROCONTROL.
