JLG Academy: Getting More by Giving Back

Our company, as most software development companies nowadays, has to deal with the chronic insufficiency of highly qualified software engineers. The inability to hire and retain more developers impacts our efforts of powering high-performing companies with mission-critical software. While our growth as a company is also affected, it's much more than that; it's about the safe operations of hundreds of thousands of collateral users that operate our systems, users that may become affected by this development throughput throttling.

Over the years, our company has been fortunate enough to hire developers with huge self-development potential. Some of them are still with us today, becoming the pillars of our long-term growth. Scaling our development workforce cannot be done effectively by only absorbing the available talent from the market. We wholeheartedly believe in the law of compensation. Therefore, in order to receive more, we need to give more back. We need to infuse the future generations of developers with our own software engineering DNA. As creativity is part of our daily job, we called it in and started to brainstorm for a solution. Therefore, JLG Academy was born. What emerged as a daring idea a few months back turned into a highly-promising development school in just a few sessions.

So what is the JLG Academy?

It's a high-intensity training with the ultimate goal of turning students with minimum or no programming experience into full-time junior developers in 3 to 6 months. Yes, we know. It's impossible. We heard it many times. But what if it isn't? It's totally worth a shot, even if we're aiming for the moon.

To maximise our chances of success, we needed to streamline the curriculum as much as possible. It's not the first time we are going through this, as we offered in-depth training to every junior dev that we hired in the past 8 years. Our trainers have sharp instincts and good eyes to recognize talent. But most importantly, they've mastered the skills to teach and inspire a growth mindset. So it might not be that impossible, after all.

How does it work?

Ideally, you have (programming studies OR experience OR self-learned OR a technical background) AND (a strong desire to become a top Software Developer). Parentheses are not random.

You can apply to the JLG Academy training program by emailing your CV at contact@jlg.ro (we still have 7 spots available this season, so hurry up!). Our colleague from HR will get in touch with you to schedule the initial interview and invite you to our office for the first talk (TIP: we look for students who are extremely motivated to learn and build products that make an impact. Make sure you emphasize your ambitions at the interview).

After you pass the initial interview, you are onboarded in one of the training groups and you will start the courses in the next session. Currently, we do two 3h sessions per week, Tuesday and Thursday, starting 15:00 EET. Each session is coordinated by a technical mentor, which will guide you through the entire process step by step.

At the end of the training program, you can expect to be ready to work on your first tasks in a real project, in close coordination with your team.

Why JLG Academy instead of other training programs?

For a few important reasons:

  1. We offer training for free. So, if this is not for you, the most you will lose is your time. Other similar training programs cost ~1900 EUR.

  2. It's super-optimized to get you to a junior developer level in 3 to 6 months (other programs take from 6 to 12 months).

  3. You will get a development laptop, which you can take home.

  4. Most importantly: if you finish your training program and pass the final exam, you will receive a work offer as a full-time employee in our company.

  5. The classes take place at our office, so you will get to know your future work colleagues and get a taste of the working atmosphere before joining the company as a full-time employee.

We treat our students the same as we treat our colleagues: with trust, empowerment and transparency. We encourage autonomy and initiative. We value loyalty and deep dedication to our lifetime goal: powering high-performing companies with mission-critical software needed to make the lives of millions of people better, safer & healthier. If you feel it might be a good fit for you, let's talk. We might get to change the world together.
